Payroll Giving Recognition Is On The Up
The Institute of Fundraising has announced that a record number of Payroll Giving Quality Mark Award certificates have been distributed in 2010 – 3,347, which is over 1,200 more than last year.

Budget Changes to Payroll Giving
Payroll Giving was mentioned in the 2010 Budget and there are a few changes, for more information please refer to the Institute of Fundraising Budget Changes for Charities, but the main points are:
- With the introduction of the "highest rate of tax" (50%), any donations via Payroll Giving would cost 50% less – so a £10 per month gift would only cost the individual £5.
- UK tax reliefs have now been extended to charities in the EU, Norway and Iceland.
- From 24th March 2010, money from Payroll Giving that is used for reasons outside of ‘charitable purposes’ will be taxed.

UK employers’ commitment to Payroll Giving was celebrated at the National Payroll Giving Excellence Awards, held on Monday 5th October 2009. Winners, including Beaverbrooks and British Heart Foundation, were presented their awards at HM Treasury by the Rt. Hon Stephen Timms MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury and the Rt. The Institute of Fundraising’s Payroll Giving Action Plan has been released, following the independent root and branch review of Payroll Giving. The Action Plan is recommended by the Institute as a means of overcoming the current barriers to Payroll Giving and encourages charities, donors and employers to adopt the mechanism.

Institute of Fundraising Calls On Employers And Employees To Do Their Bit During National Payroll Week

Latest figures show that Payroll Giving schemes have raised £89million for UK charities in 2006/7.

20 Years of Payroll Giving Sees Charities Income Rise By Over 83 Million
This year, the Institute of Fundraising (‘Institute’) is celebrating the 20th birthday of Payroll Giving and urging employers and employees to increase income to charities in 2007 by signing up to this tax-effective giving method.
First launched in 1987, Payroll Giving enables employees to donate to any UK charity straight from their gross salary, giving immediate tax relief.
In the first full year of Payroll Giving (1987/8) 1,034,695 was raised for charities. In the year 2005/6 84,740,956 was received and distributed by the Payroll Giving Agencies to charities from employees donating from their pre-tax pay. Thats a rise of over 83.5 million.

An update on the SME Payroll Giving Grants Programme
The Employer Incentive element of the SME Payroll Giving Grants Programme ended on the 31st December 2006. All SME contracts dated on or before that date and in the hands of the Payroll Giving Agencies by the 15th January will be eligible for the start-up Grants of either £300, £400 or £500 as long as the contract has been received within the period stated and accompanied by a completed Grant Application form.
In respect of all the SMEs signing up to Payroll Giving between April 2004 and the end of December the matched giving donations will continue to be made until 31st March 2007, this will apply to all employees becoming Payroll Donors and working for the contracted employers benefiting from the Employer Incentive.
Institute Launches Pilot Training Programme For Charities ‘Charity Combinations’
The Institute of Fundraising (‘Institute’) is announcing the launch of a new pilot training workshop for charities in November 2006, aimed at charities with few resources but a high local profile, that want to promote Payroll Giving to businesses in their area.
Developed and administered by the Institute, Charity Combinations – A Training Workshop for Charity Consortia is a half-day workshop that will provide delegates with a step-by-step guide to setting up and running a Payroll Giving consortium. Delegates will explore models of best practice in establishing a Payroll Giving Consortium, identify the first steps of an action plan, learn about the additional support available and understand the potential a consortium offers for building relationships with corporate organisations of all sizes.
